2008 Gala and Silent Auction @ Milwaukee Repertory Theater

On May 31 at the Rep’s Patty and Jay Baker Theater Complex, the event will feature an unforgettable setting and entertainment. Rep staff and designers have created three unforgettably unique spaces that will set the stage for an evening that is incredible. The Quadracci Powerhouse Theater Main Stage and Stage Left is being converted to a space reminiscent of the famous Rainbow Room, while the Stackner Cabaret Arboretum will feature the rich colors of a Turkish bazaar.
Entertainment will be provided by Jimi Ray Malary, who has delighted audiences in the roles of Nat King Cole and Duke Ellington in previous performances at the Stackner Cabaret. He will return to Milwaukee for a special intimate performance at the gala.

This fall, the director of athletics at Princeton suggested that sport be made a topic for academic study, and that to study athletics is no different than studying other performative art forms. He received, along with the journalist reporting the story, many hostile reactions. In answer to the prevailing attitude that sport and art are mutually exclusive, this program of short film and video will showcase underground/avant-guarde artists’ conceptions of sport and athleticism.

Now in its tenth year, MSFF proves once again that even just a little (a few minutes, perhaps) can go a long way. Under the direction of Ross Bigley and Dirty Jobs Films, MSFF gives May a kick with a kick-off party at Art Bar and two full days of short film screenings, some made in Milwaukee, some shipped in from around the world.
Programs include Homegrown Film Day, World View Day and a “Late Night” screening of darker material, including the premiere of VITAL blogger Michael Gull’s Victim, starting at 8:30 pm, followed by an after-party performance by the Independent Idols. The small and the modest shall inherent the earth, we think, and MSFF proves once again to be doing great things in small doses on Milwaukee’s art scene. Japanese noise legend ASTRO- May 24th @ Borg Ward

The cities only organization dedicated to DIY experimental art, The Borg Ward, is honored to present ASTRO, a.k.a. Hiroshi Hasegawa.
Hasegawa is one of the founders of the late 80's Japanese noise scene, alongside such acts as Merzbow, Masonna, Incapacitants and Killer Bug, where he started his noise career as a member of the highly influential group C.C.C.C. Now, as a solo drone artist performing under the moniker Astro, he still manages to show why he is considered one of the best performers in experimental music today, underground or not. After headlining at this year's No Fun Fest, the largest noise festival in the world, he will be performing at a select number of American cities, and Milwaukee is one of them. This is a world class performer and missing his show in Milwaukee would be nothing short of a mistake.
Performing with Astro is TV Pow w/ Mike Shiflet, Goat and local acts Mouths, Peter J Woods and Nummy.

Free 21st Annual Time Warner Cable Family Kite Festival @ Veteran’s Park

Kickoff your spring with the whole family by taking part in the 21st annual Family Kite Festival at Veteran’s Park. The festival is free with plenty of free parking. The Grand Launch of 500 kites will take place at noon, with Rhonda Begus singing the National Anthem. Kites and food will be sold at the festival. Featured kite expert performers include Chicago Fire, Josh and Zack Gordon, Charlie Sotich, Team Pegasus, Dan Neuman, Paula Schenk, Jim Wirt, Paul Keopke, Mike Delfar and the kites of Yves LaForest and Jean Lemire.

Milwaukee Public Radio announces that Jamie Tarabay, award-winning NPR journalist is scheduled to speak Thursday, May 22, 2008 at 7:30 pm in the Harbor Lights Room-Downtown Transit Center.
For the past nine years, Tarabay has been a foreign correspondent covering–and living in–some of the world's highest-profile regions of conflict. Tarabay is one of the few female Western journalists to have made a career as a war reporter. In that time she's been arrested, proposed to by militiamen, interviewed everyone from world leaders to armed fighters, been shot at, felt the blast of an IED and the punches of demonstrators as well as police.
After reporting from Iraq for two years as NPR's Baghdad Bureau Chief, Jamie Tarabay is now embarking on a two year project reporting on America's Muslims. The coverage will take in the country's approx 6 million Muslims, of different ethnic, socio-economic and cultural backgrounds, and the issues facing their daily lives as Americans.

Some come one and come all to witness history in the making with The Alchemist Theatre.

Champagne at the Allis @ Charles Alliis Art Museum

Sponsored by the Friends of the Charles Allis, Champagne at the Allis capitalizes on the English Tudor architectural and decorative theme of the Allis' home. UWM's Leonard Sorkin Institute of Chamber Music will provide period musical entertainment, and tours of the house will be available. There might even be croquet on the lawn! Complimentary themed drinks and hors d'oeuvres provided by Ellen Zilli's Catering, as well as a cash bar. A silent auction features a work from Milwaukee's David Lenz (winner in 2006 of the first portrait competition ever sponsored by the National Gallery, part of the Smithsonian Institute), as well as other artists' work and items.

Paddlefest 2008 @ Laacke and Joys
