10th Annual Susan G. Komen Milwaukee Race for the Cure @ Henry W. Maier Festival Park

5k run/walk, 1 mile walk. Post-Race celebration, Pink in the Park, will run from 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at Veterans Park and will feature refreshments, award ceremonies, survivor recognition, live music and more.
This year, more than 12,000 participants are expected, and the goal is to raise $1 MILLION. Up to 75% of that money stays in our community to fund breast cancer screening, treatment and education.

What do you get when you combine swingin’ rockabilly, burlesque dancers, acrobats, carny madmen and luchadors performing aerial wrestling stunts? Take a deep breath, Milwaukee, and prepare yourself for Mondo Lucha, a one-nightonly vaudevillian extravaganza! During this three hour show at historic Turner Hall Ballroom, you’ll see live performances by our very own Uptown Savages, psychotic stunts and skits courtesy of the Dead Man’s Carnival and burlesque acts from across the Midwest shakin’ and shimmyin’ all night long. But wait! There’s more! Throughout the night there will be high-flying lucha libre style wrestling matches – masks and all! Milwaukee Noise Fest @ The Borg Ward

The name says it all. A slew of Milwaukee (and surrounding area) bands bring you Noise Fest 2008, three days of experimental music to blow your mind – or at least create bubbles in your brain. Expect the unexpected when you head down to the Borg Ward for music that crosses genres from psychedelic to ambient, metal to industrial. Each day is sure to sate your discordant cravings, put you in a trance and most likely make your body move like it’s never moved before. Highlights of the fest are a reunion show by Boy Dirt Car, and a performance by the one-woman noise act Nummy. She’s not even 18, but she rocks pretty hard. The creative minds at Flux Design have been making their mark on Milwaukee for over eight years, transforming the city’s hottest spots into works of art. Catch their distinctive style at local haunts like Water Buffalo, Eve and the wonderfully organic Roots Restaurant and Cellar. Co-founders Jeremy Shamrowicz and Jesse Meyer share the love with this annual benefit, creating original art and then auctioning the pieces off in support of MIAD’s academic programs. The event features large-scale steamroller prints created on-site, while MIAD alumni fabricate mixed media sculpture live for your witnessing pleasure. For the past 10 years, Center Street Daze has helped us bid a fond farewell to summer with a ridiculously fun street party. This year promises the same with a day full of bands, beer and so much more. The highlight of the day is undoubtedly the infamous Art Cart Race, a “thrill-a-minute” dash to the finish line featuring hand-made human powered go-karts. Last year’s race lit the streets on fire – literally. Stick around after the races to peruse the street where you’ll find art, crafts, books, food & drink, live bands playing all day long and general tomfoolery. It’s worth the short jaunt to Riverwest and a great way to spend the last few days of summer!

Milwaukee River Challenge @ Milwaukee and Menomonee Rivers

Once again, Manpower Inc. brings us a rip-roaring race up Milwaukee’s rivers. Olympic, US National Team, collegiate and club rowers from across the nation will convene in Milwaukee for a 2.5-mile race on the Milwaukee and Menomonee Rivers that passes under 16 bridges in the heart of our city. Ride on the Wild Side @ Milwaukee County Zoo

This special event presents an opportunity to experience and participate in a variety of cultural, artistic, religious, and social expressions of peace. For 30 years, the Frank Mots International Kite Festival has been lighting up the skyline with graceful kites from around the world. Global Union Music festival @ Humboldt Park

This two-day event brings musicians and artists from around the globe right to our own backyard, turning Humboldt Park into a who’s-who of world music. One of the last great (and FREE) parties of the summer, Global Union showcases an eclectic mix of performances, including Carnatic-style guitar tributes to Jimi Hendrix, traditional Russian music and village vocals with a tinge of American folk, and a Cuban jazz flutist, to name a few. Bring the whole gang (young and old), a lawn chair and a picnic lunch. You can even bring your dog (leashed, of course). Don’t like to plan ahead? Stop & Smell the Herbs and Roses @ Boerner Gardens

Boerner Botanical Gardens, 9400 Boerner Drive in Hales Corners, announces Stop and Smell the Herbs and Roses on Saturday, September 13 from 10am to 4pm. The Herb Society of America-WI unit, Waukesha Rose Society, and Boerner Botanical Gardens have partnered to provide the community this great event featuring herbs and roses. Guests will learn about general rose care and organic rose growing. They will also be able to taste and learn about edible flowers like roses and learn about floral arranging with herbs and roses.The cost to attend this event is included in the regular admission fee ($4.50 adults, children $2.50 ages 6-17) to Boerner Gardens. Coalition of Photographic Arts Regional Juried Exhibition @ Walker’s Point Center for the Arts

Wisconsin’s fastest growing arts organization, the Coalition of Photographic Arts (CoPA) is proud to announce the artists selected for the Second Annual Juried Exhibition. CoPA received 138 entries representing WI, IL, MN, and MI.Juror Awards for CoPA’s Second Annual Juried Exhibition include Best in Show, 2nd and 3rd Place Honorable Mention, as well as a People’s Choice Award selected by viewers. The exhibition opens with an artist’s reception on Friday, September 12, 2008 from 6-9pm at the Walker’s Point Center for the Arts, 911 W. National Avenue, Milwaukee, WI 53204, (414) 672-2787. George Slade, Artistic Director of the Minnesota Center for Photography and contest juror, will be giving a Gallery talk at 7:00 p.m. on October 10th with a reception beginning an hour before his talk. A closing reception during Milwaukee’s Gallery Night and Day on October 17th will bring CoPA’s Second Annual Juried Exhibition to a close on Saturday, October 18th.
